To The Future (2011 Goals)
I did not set training goals for 2010; I tend to have a problem with a) setting goals that are ridiculously low or b) goals that are impossibly high. But I'm going to give it a valiant try.
I will say that Marge was enormously successful in our training endeavors this past year. In 2010, she completed three titles and got very close to finishing three more.
I essentially have our trial schedule for the first half of 2011 already set. We'll probably be doing about 10 days of agility from February to June, as well as at least two (hopefully more) days of APDT Rally.
With that in mind, my performance goals for the first half of 2011 (January - June) are:
Agility
- to complete the OA title
- to complete the OAJ title
- to accumulate TWO qualifying scores in Excellent A, regardless of class (Standard or Jumpers),
- and, most of all, FOR BOTH OF US TO KEEP OUR HEADS SCREWED ON STRAIGHT WHILE WE'RE IN THE RING!
Rally
- to complete the RL2 title
- to accumulate TWO double-qualifying scores towards the ARCH title in APDT Rally
- to begin training for APDT Rally Level 3
Obedience
- to attend ONE obedience match with Marge at my club
- to drastically improve heeling footwork
- to maintain performance of stays, fronts, and finishes
At the end of June, when we have a month or two off, I'll come back and see which goals we met and which we didn't meet and hopefully form some more goals for the Fall trial season.
General Training
In terms of general training/management.. it's hard to form specific goals. I hope, however...
- to continue to find ways to socialize Marge (such as attending more club meetings with her)
- to push our boundaries; to better recognize when we can dive a little deeper and when we need to back out of a situation
- to keep her active and outside as much as possible without having her scared
- to continue to make progress regarding her situational fears around my dad
Here's to a successful 2011!

The Momster hasn't even begun to think about 2011 goals with all the busyness around here. We wish you lots of luck with your goals. We are sure Marge will not disappoint you. Happy New Year to both of you.

What a great idea to set some goals...writing them down is very brave! I'm sure you and Marge will continue to meet lots of goals, big and small. Look at how far you've come so far!
Happy New Year!
Scary stuff putting that in black and white! As focused as you've been I think you have set some good do-able goals! Is Marge on board?
Those sound like wonderful (and very attainable for you) goals to us. I'm in the process of doing the same thing.
I can't believe how early we have to enter trials to get in - just mailed in my entries for a Feb 19-20 trial & fingers crossed we get in since it got there the day AFTER it opened! We need to up our schedule, hoping to trial 2-3 days twice a month between now and June 30 - trying to qualify for Eukaneuba next year in Florida (that's our #1 goal for 2011). So we'll have to start entering more new venues & traveling several hours to do it. Hoping Brutus can handle the stress better now that he's shown me he can shine in a brand new place.
Other than that, I want to finish Exc A Std (we just finished our AXJ at our last trial), and hope for a couple of sets of QQ by year's end and maybe 50 MACH points? I think we can finish our MXJ by the end of 2011 if everyone stays healthy. It's going to be such a different world in Exc B, have no idea what to expect. Just know it's going to take FOREVER to get MACH points with a slow(ish) dog. 5 sec under SCT is pretty fabulous for us right now, working in training to tighten up our turns & handling so we can hopefully shave off a few more seconds here & there!
Happy New Year, and good luck with your goals. I personally bet you totally smash them :)

Cheers to you and Marge in 2011. Many more great things are on their way for you two!
These goals are only for the first half of 2011. Since I really have no idea what the trial season is going to bring us (especially once we get to Excellent), it made sense to split the year in half. I'll come back to this post in June, probably after our (hopefully not so blazing hot) last trial at the end of June.
Sounds like some great goals - good luck in meeting them all! Happy New Year!
Great goals!!! They seem attainable to me... which will make them into really good motivators for you.
I should think about some goals for my dogs even though they don't do competition. It would help keep us all focused. Thanks for the idea!
I expected the "door problem" to be on the list. Do you have any ideas about that one? I feel certain that my trainer would have ideas but they usually involve everyone on earth cooperating with the training... which is the hard part (e.g., like having a container of treats next to the door and the visitor tosses treats to Marge before entering...).
I didn't mean to bring up a tough subject. Because you and Marge have been SO successful, I was thinking of lofty goals for you. Kudos to you.
That's a good point, KB! I didn't think of that at all, despite the fact that I just posted about it. I suppose I kind of lumped it into "progress regarding my dad," because that's when the door issue really manifests itself the most (other times when people enter they knock on the door or ring the bell, which does give me time to get Marge to a more acceptable location). I'm not sure we have the amount of traffic necessary to really work that issue with strangers as thoroughly as we should be working it.
Definitely something to keep in mind, though. And we ARE making some real progress with Marge moving away from the door when my dad is entering, as she's demonstrated to me this past week (I'll likely update about that on Tuesday).
Thank you for bringing it up!
I know it will be a very successful 2011 for you two!
Kisses and hugs

You've got great goals! I like splitting the year in half, that sounds so much better than trying to guess where you'll be in 12 months. I'm absolutely convinced you guys will finish your OA and OAJ and get Q's in Excellent as well.
What a grrreat 2010 for Marge! Isn't interesting to see how far you've come and now what you're ready to tackle in the new year!
